Guest Post: Mom’s Famous Cherry Pie

Cherry Pie with Lattice Crust

What better way to kick off my “Pin It to Win It” Mothers Day Giveaway than with the first guest post by my Momma!

Cherry Pie with Lattice Crust

While my Dad does most of the cooking around our house, my Mom is definitely the baker.  Everyone loves Moms delicious pies and not only are they scrumptious, they’re also beautiful… just like her 🙂

Muffet Bond with Cherry Pie

I asked her to kick off the Mothers Day Giveaway with her famous pie recipe.  She was happy to make it… and my Dad and their neighbors were happy to eat it 🙂

Cherry Pie Ingredients

Ingredients

Crust
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 3/8 cup milk
  • pinch of salt
Filling
  • 3 cans pitted tart red cherries, packed in water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

My Mom learned how to make the crust from her mother-in-law and my Grandma Meme.  The trick is that the dough needs to be moist, so be sure to have enough liquid added to the flour.

Another tip from Mom is to roll out the dough on a floured dough sheet, with waxed paper on top to avoid sticking to the rolling pin.

To prepare the crust sift the flour & add a pinch of salt.  Next, mix the oil & milk together.  Add the oil & milk to the flour mixture.

Roll out the dough, making enough for the bottom and lattice top.

The Perfect Pie Crust

Place the bottom of the dough into the pie plate.

The Perfect Pie Crust

To prepare the lattice top roll out the dough into a circle then cut the dough into 1/2 inch wide strips.

Set aside and prepare the filling. To make the filling, drain the cherries, but reserve 1 cup of cherry juice.

Cherry Pie Filling

Combine reserve cherry juice, sugar and cornstarch in a medium pan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick.

Cherry Pie Filling

Remove from the heat and stir in the cherries then pour into the crust.

How to make cherry pie

Top with the lattice crust by carefully weaving the strips of dough over the filling.

How to Make a Lattice Pie Crust

Continue until the entire pie is covered.

Lattice Pie Crust

Slice the crust pieces hanging over the edge then top the pie with 1 tablespoon of butter, cut into four cubes, then sprinkle the pie with sugar.

Cherry Pie with Lattice Crust

Bake 10 minutes at 450° then reduce heat to 350° and bake 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Cherry Pie with Lattice Crust

Voila! A beautiful, homemade cherry pie that looks like it took hours to prepare, but is really quite simple!

Strawberry Cucumber Juice and Healthy Juicer Giveaway

Healthy Juicer

I was beyond excited when I ran into my friend Drew at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim!  I know Drew as a photographer and fellow Okie, but I totally forgot that he has another business in addition to his photography.  Enter: the Healthy Juicer!

He was at the expo promoting the Healthy Juicer and I started talking with him about giving one away to a lucky fan of the blog.  He not only agreed to give one away, he also gave one to me!  I was so excited when I picked it up last weekend and couldn’t wait to start juicing!

Juicing Cucumber with Healthy Juicer

It is so easy to put together, use and clean! I was skeptical at first, but after using it a couple of times this weekend, it’s totally true!

I busted out my fruit, vegetables and juicer, chopped the fruits and veggies, put together the healthy juicer, juiced it up, drank up the deliciousness, then took it apart and cleaned it, all in less than 30 minutes!

Juicing Strawberries

There are no messy screens to scrub and the Healthy Juicer even comes with this handy little wrench to help take the juicer apart! They also have this sweet video to show you just how quick the cleanup process is!

How to use the Healthy Juicer

The Healthy Juicer is a masticating juicer, masticating means to ‘chew’ or grind. Other juicers that are centrifugal, use a high RPM  to cut the produce and then slap it against the screen, extracting the juice. During this process there is heat build-up and oxidation which kills nutrients.  The Healthy Juicer uses a high torque motor with a 72 RPM auger to squeeze the juice out of produce with no heat-build up, resulting in a live-enzyme juice and killing no nutrients. Yay for keeping your nutrients!

Another benefit is that a masticating juicer such as the Healthy Juicer can juice wheatgrass and other leafy greens, whereas others simply can’t.  Wheatgrass is entirely too fibrous for a centrifugal juicer to extract juice.  Check out this Healthy Juicer full demo video for even more information on this awesome juicing machine!

Strawberry Cucumber Kale Juice

For my first juicing experience I combined Strawberries, Cucumbers and Kale!

Ingredients

  • 8-10 strawberries
  • 1 cup kale (chopped)
  • 1 cup cucumber (sliced)

Add each ingredient to the Healthy Juicer and watch it go to work producing a delicious, super healthy, nutrient packed beverage!

Giveaway – Enter to Win Free Longaberger Pottery!!!

Whitney Bond, Muffet Bond, San Diego, Oklahoma, Sooners, Thunder, Christmas, Los Angeles

“People let me tell you ’bout my best friend, She’s a warm-hearted person who’ll love me till the end. Yes she’s my best friend.”

Yes, it took a Harry Nilsson song from the 70’s to describe my Mom.  She’s just that much of a classic 🙂

Now you might be asking yourself, why are you talking about your Mom, I thought there was a giveaway going on?  Are you giving away your Mom?

No Way! But we have combined our businesses for my first LLB giveaway!

You know at the bottom of all my recipes there’s that nice little blurb about the beautiful pottery I use in all of my posts? Well that blurb will lead you to my Moms Longaberger business website.  Longa-what?  Yes, Longaberger.  If you are not familiar with the brand they are a direct sales company based in Ohio that sells beautiful handmade baskets as well as unique, gorgeous pottery that is microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher safe.

My Mom began her career with the company when her second little bundle of joy (me!) came into the world. I think she realized from the day I was born that I was going to need a lot of attention (boy was she right!) and she should probably find a job that she could do from home with a flexible schedule!

Twenty-something years later, she is still with the company and I might be her biggest customer!  Every new piece of pottery they announce, I feel the need for it, hence the large inventory of pottery I now own!

For my first giveaway on Little Leopard Book I wanted to choose a piece of pottery that I’ve owned for years and that would be practical for anyone to use!  This piece is “Grandma Bonnie’s Pie Plate”.

Longaberger, Pie Plate, Grandma Bonnies, Pink Lemonade Pie, Giveaway

It was part of the original 5 pieces of pottery that Longaberger released in 1990. I own two and have been using them for years to make everything from Meme’s Pink Lemonade Pie (seen above) to Fresh Strawberry Pie and most recently my Chocolate Chip Caramelized Pecan Cookie Pie.  I know that some people already own a pie plate, but with the holidays coming around, who really makes just one pie?  I know my Mom and I will be making pecan, pumpkin and apple pies for Thanksgiving, hence the need for multiple pie plates!

The dish comes in 7 beautiful colors, which you will get to choose from!  Yes, choices, fun! You can view all of the different colors here!

There are 6 ways to enter the giveaway, do all 6, increase your chances to win by 6 times!
