Grocery Shopping at ALDI

As a professional food blogger, I spend a lot of time at the grocery store, I mean, A LOT!

I’m always intrigued when a new grocery store comes to town and excited to see what it’s all about!

While ALDI has been in business for over 40 years in the US, now operating over 1,500 stores in 34 states, they’re new to Southern California and just diving into San Diego!

Last week, I took a trip to their new location in Vista (North San Diego) to check out what the store was all about!

Upon arriving at ALDI, you’ll find that their cart situation differs from the norm. To grab a cart, you’ll need a quarter. That’s right, a quarter unlocks a shopping cart, but when you return your cart, you get your quarter back! I actually really love this concept because I’m the person that always returns my cart to it’s proper storage area because no one wants a runaway cart in the parking lot dinging up their car!

Once I had my cart and shopping list in tow, it was time to hit the aisles to see what the products were like and what deals I could find. Over 90% of the products found in ALDI stores are ALDI exclusive brands, like liveGfree ®, their line of gluten free products that I was super excited to try and share with all of my gluten free friends!

I was happy to see tons of fresh produce at great prices, including a bag of 6 avocados for $.99, say what?! Yup, you heard me right, 6 beautiful, fresh, creamy avocados for under a buck, now that I was VERY HAPPY about!

I continued around the store and grabbed everything from SimplyNature® Organic Quinoa to Brussels Sprouts to liveGfree® Gluten Free Baking Mix to SimplyNature® Organic Coconut Oil.

I then proceeded to check out and realized I had only brought one shopping bag and had a totally full cart of groceries (this seriously happens to me all of the time!), but no worries, I was able to buy bags at check out. One of the ways ALDI keeps their prices low, and supports going green, is by selling eco-friendly, reusable shopping bags and charging $.10 per paper bag or $.15 per plastic bag at checkout, thus encouraging people to BYOB, bring your own bags!

I unloaded my bags into the car, returned my cart and received my quarter back!

Overall, I found the new ALDI store super easy to navigate, I was able to find almost every product on my grocery list and I was able to purchase all of the products at great, discounted prices, some 50%* less than most brands at large, national grocery chains!

In addition to shopping at the store, ALDI shipped me some of their favorite products with four recipes from the ALDI Test Kitchen to try at home as part of my partnership with ALDI.

I’ll be sharing all of these recipes on the blog in just two weeks, but here’s a sneak peek at the Warm Superfood Salad, one of my new favorite recipes, filled with fresh kale, brussels sprouts, apples and grapes!
