Slow Cooker Black Pepper Beef and Broccoli

The best black pepper beef and broccoli recipe is made in a crockpot with a delicious Chinese black pepper sauce, then tossed with noodles for a simple slow cooker meal that only takes 10 minutes of prep time!

Black Pepper Beef and Broccoli with rice noodles and scallions on plate with chopsticks

It’s hard to pick the best dish at Tasty Noodle House, our favorite Chinese restaurant in San Diego, but their Black Pepper Beef & Noodles is definitely in the top 3!

While I’ve already recreated some of our favorite Chinese chicken dishes, like Orange Chicken, Honey Chicken and Chinese Lettuce Wraps, it was about time I recreated our favorite Chinese beef dish!

I decided to slow cook the beef in the Chinese black pepper sauce, so that the beef would be extremely tender, with a deep, rich flavor. There’s also no need to marinate the meat, as it cooks in the sauce for hours, so it soaks in all of the sauce!

The great thing is, you can set it and forget it, then toss the noodles and broccoli in at the end.

The sauce will cook the noodles right in the crock pot and the broccoli will be steamed in the slow cooker, so there’s no need for extra pots or pans!

Homemade taco seasoning in bowl with spoon

I’ve been making this homemade taco seasoning for years. I use it in Taco Soup, Buffalo Taco Spaghetti, Taco Croissants, simple ground beef tacos and so many other recipes!

I always make a big batch to keep on hand, along with my homemade French Onion Dip Mix and Fajita Seasoning (equal parts chili powder, paprika, cumin and sea salt).

The seasoning mixes are stored in half pint mason jars in the pantry, so they’re always ready to use when I need them for a recipe.

Korean BBQ Beef in a Bowl with Diced Scallions

Thanks to my friends at California Beef Council for sponsoring today’s post!

There’s nothing I love more than making one dish that you can turn into multiple meals throughout the week. On next weeks episode of the “Feed Me!” podcast, we’re talking all about that!

If you haven’t tuned in to the “Feed Me!” podcast yet, you definitely need to! It’s so much fun and we talk all about delicious recipes, tacos, one pot meals and more!

On the upcoming episode, it’s back to school time and I’m talking about easy recipes you can make once and turn into different lunches through the week. This Korean BBQ Beef is made in just 29 minutes, then can be used to make tasty tacos, delicious bowls or healthy lettuce wraps throughout the week.

I made this Korean BBQ Beef recipe with my go-to Korean BBQ Sauce! I first introduced this sauce on the blog almost 4 years ago in this recipe for Slow Cooker Korean BBQ Meatballs. Since then, I’ve used it in recipes for Korean BBQ Grilled Salmon, Korean BBQ Short Ribs and Slow Cooker Korean BBQ Chicken Tacos.

Needless to say, it’s one of my favorite sauces ever and it’s so easy to make!

Shishito Peppers with Soy Ginger Sauce

Blistered Shishito Peppers sauteed in Soy Ginger Sauce are an Asian restaurant favorite that you can now easily make at home with this simple 20 minute recipe!

Blistered Shishito Peppers in Soy Ginger Sauce with Crispy Panko Breadcrumbs

Over the years I’ve turned hundreds of friends and family members on to the deliciousness that is a Shishito Pepper! Ok, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but lets just say I’ve introduced a lot of people to these amazing little peppers, and out of all those people, everyone has loved them!

What are shishito peppers?

Shishito peppers are a sweet pepper from East Asia, often served as a starter at popular sushi restaurants such as Nobu, Ra and Katsuya. The fun thing about these peppers is that they’re a mild, sweet pepper, yet about one in every ten is spicy!  Surprise!

I call them the “Russian roulette” of peppers because you never know when you’re going to get a spicy one!

Up until a couple of years ago, I was only able to find fresh shishitos at the Asian markets around San Diego, but now I see them at most major grocery stores, including Sprouts and Trader Joe’s.

Baked Salmon Fajitas with Bell Peppers and Onions, Sliced Avocado and Lime Wedge in Bowl with Rice

Fajitas are a staple around our house. They are one of the few meals that Kurt actually makes himself, but for this fajita recipe, I took charge and switched things up a bit!

Inspired by these popular 10 Minute Veggie Fajita Rice Bowls, I turned these sheet pan salmon fajitas into a bowl for myself, but also served them in a more traditional style in flour tortillas for Kurt. Both versions are totally delicious, so serve as you’d like! You could even ditch the rice and tortillas to make this recipe Whole 30 approved!

I recently joined the brand new podcast “Feed Me!” as a featured guest on their first episode. We chatted about ways to use your slow cooker and Instant Pot in the summer, my favorite comfort food and tips and tricks for cooking with an Instant Pot.

One of my favorite things about the Instant Pot is the fact that you can sear meat directly in the Instant Pot before you pressure cook the dish, so that you’re left with only one pot to clean up after the meal!

While this Instant Pot Beef Ragu recipe is one of my favorite meals and can be eaten year-round, I wanted to try something new, light and fresh for summer, which is why I created this Instant Pot Beef with Tomato Basil Bruschetta.

One of the most important aspects of the Whole30 diet is paying attention to labels and buying the best 100% grass-fed, organic meats whenever possible.

During “Whole30 March” I’ve relied on my friends at ButcherBox to fill my fridge with grass-fed beef, free range organic chicken and Whole30 approved bacon.

If you’re not familiar, ButcherBox is a high quality meat subscription service that delivers your choice of beef, chicken, pork, or a combination of meats, right to your door every 30 or 60 days! Ground chicken, spices, veggies and buffalo sauce are baked in bell peppers for a healthy recipe that's gluten free, dairy free and Whole30 compliant!

It’s the 1st of March and also the first day of “Whole 30 March” on the blog!

I decided to share a month of Whole 30 recipes for a few reasons. I wanted to create new healthy recipes both for the blog and for my weekly menu. I had several friends and followers request Whole 30 recipes. And I realized that you could have buffalo sauce (certain brands, of course!) while eating Whole30 and then I was in!

I’ve never been a “diet” person but I do believe in balancing healthy eating along with indulgent eats for a well rounded diet that let’s you enjoy the foods you love, along with making sure you eat your peas and carrots! 😉

The Whole 30 recipes I’ll be sharing this month are not just for those on the Whole30 diet. Shishitos are Asian peppers that are generally sweet with a spicy one every once in a while. They’re usually sautéed and served as an appetizer at Japanese restaurants. I introduced a recipe for Soy Ginger Shishito Peppers on the blog in 2013 and they’ve been a huge hit ever since!

Lately, I’ve been seeing shishito peppers popping up in major grocery stores, whereas I used to only be able to find them at Asian markets. With the popularity and the convenience of picking up these delicious peppers at my local grocery store, I decided it was time to introduce another shishito recipe on the blog and it just so happens that shishito peppers pair perfectly with shrimp stir fry!

Chipotle honey glazed salmon is placed in warm corn tortillas & topped with fresh mango salsa in this mouth-watering recipe for healthy salmon tacos!

Yesterday was “Taco Tuesday” so I decided to combine two of the most trendy ingredients of the summer, salmon and chipotle, in a new dish!

Salmon is the superfood fish that is packed with Omega 3’s which help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while keeping your mind sharp and skin glowing! This colorful and vitamin-rich fish has been one of the most searched foods of the summer and I just so happen to think that I’ve created the perfect salmon recipe!

There’s nothing I love more than firing up the grill for dinner on warm summer nights and weekend BBQ’s!

This weekend we put our first offer in on a house (eeeeek!) It’s so exciting and terrifying at the same time. This house needs A LOT of work, so I’ve been putting some serious spreadsheet skills to use creating a list of all the work that needs to be done, a timeline for the renovation and budgeting.

Even though it seems totally unnecessary, one of the things at the top of my list is an outdoor patio addition. I love entertaining, especially outdoors in San Diego, so this is really important to me! After living in an apartment for almost a year without having a space to entertain outside (or really inside for that matter!) I can’t wait to get in the new house (fingers crossed!) and fire up the grill for that first outdoor BBQ!

I simply can’t get enough of the current “bowl trend”, for me it’s a fun and delicious way to eat healthier without just eating a salad every day!

But of course, I do have to admit that this recipe was inspired by A SALAD (ironic, I know!) at one of my favorite San Diego restaurants, Coffee Cup. Their Chino Citrus Salad is a combination of mixed greens topped with orange slices, carrots, bean sprouts, cilantro, grilled chicken and their delicious homemade dressing.

After eating it for lunch last week, I decided to come home and recreate the salad as a bowl!

This easy Chinese Pork Chop Suey recipe combines pork, veggies & a delicious Asian sauce, served over white rice, topped with crispy chow mein noodles!

We’re only one week into March and this month has already been crazy with travel! I started the month in Gainesville, FL at the “Cox Smart Home” event with Cox Communications, where I showed local media and guests how to make their kitchen “smart” using Cox high speed internet.

Now if you’re wondering how to use high speed internet in the kitchen to do more than just browse WhitneyBond.com for new recipe inspiration, I’m here to tell you, there are lots of fun ways to do so! At the “Cox Smart Home” event I shared with guests how to use my Amazon Alexa App “Whitney Bond’s Recipe Search” which will verbally walk you through any recipe on WhitneyBond.com totally hands free! I also shared how to use WiFi devices in the kitchen, like this WiFi Crock Pot and WiFi Coffee Maker.

The event was so much fun, and I’m already gearing up to join them for another “Cox Smart Home” event in Phoenix next month!

With lots of travel on the horizon, when I’m home, I love to cook up new recipes for the blog and comfort foods for me and the boyfriend.

While the rest of the country has had abnormally warm winter weather the last couple of weeks (I’m looking at you NYC & Chicago!) my lovely sunny San Diego has been drowning in rain for the last two months and much cooler than usual.

The one good thing about this “Freaky Friday” weather we’ve been having is busting out the winter slow cooker recipes to warm up! I’ve been making everything from Spicy Chicken Enchilada Soup to Thai Peanut Meatballs to Slow Cooker Pot Roast to help get us through these brutally cold winter days in San Diego. With a new year, comes new years resolutions to eat healthier. For me, one of the best ingredients to keep in the fridge to stay healthy is Jennie-O Extra Lean Ground Turkey Breast.  It’s loaded with protein and low in fat and calories, making it a great choice for substituting ground beef in recipes like tacos, meatballs, chili and bolognese!

This turkey bolognese has only 272 calories and 5 grams fat per serving, while it boasts 31 grams of protein per serving. (This recipe makes 4 servings!) I bet you all were wondering what other dish I created using that delicious Paleo Vegan Walnut Sage Pesto I made last week!

I apologize if it’s been keeping you up at night, but never fear, the new recipe is here and you can be guaranteed a good nights rest tonight 😉

Vegan Roasted Green Bean Pesto Salad

This Paleo salad recipe is full of rich flavors and would be perfect served with any of our Paleo main dishes, such as Roasted Balsamic Pork Tenderloin, Lemon Herb Salmon or Herb Crusted Turkey Breast!

Roasted Green Bean Salad Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 lb green beans
  • 1 cup grape tomatoes
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 red bell pepper (diced)
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil (chiffonade)
  • 1/4 cup Walnut Sage Pesto (click link for recipe)
  • 1/3 cup walnuts

Preheat the oven to 400°.

Begin by trimming the ends off the green beans, chopping them into 1 inch pieces and adding them to a large mixing bowl.

Chopped Fresh Green Beans

Add the tomatoes, bell peppers and garlic cloves to the bowl then drizzle with the balsamic vinegar, olive oil and top with the black pepper.

Toss together then place onto a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper.

Roasted Green Beans and Tomatoes

Top with the fresh basil and place into the oven for 25-30 minutes.

While the vegetables are roasting, toast the walnuts in a small skillet over medium heat for 3-5 minutes.

Toasted Walnuts

Remove the vegetables from the oven.

Add the roasted vegetables to a large mixing bowl.

My recommendation: grab the sides of the parchment paper or foil (like this ↓) and simply slide it into the bowl so you make sure to get all the roasted vegetables and the delicious balsamic juices into the bowl.

Next, add the pesto to the roasted vegetables.

Chili Lime Garlic Grilled Shrimp

Grilled shrimp is marinated in a delicious, slightly spicy, chili lime garlic marinade, then cooked on the grill, or in a cast iron skillet, for an easy, healthy gluten free recipe!

Chili Lime Garlic Grilled Shrimp

Yay!!  My first dinner post!! So unfortunately my roomie Nick is moving back to Boston on Tuesday, but fortunately that gave us a great excuse to plan a little going-away dinner for him this weekend that involved surf-and-turf!

Now if you would have asked me 5 years ago what surf-and-turf was I would have probably said some sort of exercise but after venturing in to the seafood world about 3 years ago… yes New Years Day 2009 was my first time to eat anything out of the water IN MY LIFE!  No salmon, no shrimp, no lobster, not even my favorite… crab until this fateful day in 2009! I don’t know how I lived before crab legs, lobster rolls and one of my favorite  things I’ve ever made… Chili-Lime-Garlic Grilled Shrimp!

Chili Lime Garlic Grilled Shrimp

Now there’s still that fishy (get it, fishy, haha) story out there that my parents always try to tell me about how I ate fish sticks from Hardee’s when I was about 9 years old because I thought they were chicken strips, but all the same, for the purpose of this post we’ll say my first fish experience was in 2009 (besides I don’t know if you can consider fish sticks from Hardee’s really fish!)

Back to the dinner…so, as soon as the boys (my two roommates) decided on surf-and-turf for dinner I knew I had to make these grilled shrimp.  I made them once before on Father’s Day this year and they were to-die-for!

Garlic Chili Lime Grilled Shrimp Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 15-20 large shrimp (peeled & deveined)

Place all of the above ingredients, except the shrimp, in a medium bowl and whisk to combine.

Garlic Chili Lime Grilled Shrimp Recipe

Add the shrimp and toss to coat. Place in the refrigerator to marinate for 15 minutes.

Grill the shrimp for app. 3 minutes on each side.

They can also be grilled indoors in a cast iron skillet.

Chili Lime Garlic Grilled Shrimp Recipe

Now these little shrimpies are ready to come off the grill and get in my belly!

Chili Lime Garlic Grilled Shrimp

I finished off the meal by throwing in the leftover creamy orzo from Wednesdays lunch with some crispy veggies and some grilled corn on the cob and we had a serious feast going on!

Fast forward almost 4 years later to April 2015, and I made this Cilantro Lime Pesto Risotto, then topped it with this shrimp, so delicious!
