What happens when Philly cheesesteak meets taco night

I know, I know, the purest out there from Philadelphia will say “this is not a cheesesteak!” But I’m not saying it’s a cheesesteak, I’m saying it’s a cheesesteak taco. And this is a fusion recipe that you need in your life!

In 2024 I started a series on Instagram where I shared a new Trader Joe’s 5 ingredient recipe every week. The series was so successful that I turned all of the recipes into an ebook. Click on the link and you can get it for FREE!

Due to reader demand for more of these recipes, I’m back and bringing you a new Trader Joe’s 5 ingredient recipe every week. But don’t worry if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s around you. I’ll give alternate ingredients that you can pick up at any major grocery store, so you can always make these recipes at home.

For this weeks recipe, I’m sharing a mash-up that I know you’ll love! There’s steak, there’s veggies, there’s creamy queso, and it’s all wrapped up in a warm tortilla, what’s not to love? Oh and did I mention it’s made in only 20 minutes for an easy weeknight meal!

Assorted Trader Joe's ingredients on a wooden surface: shaved beef steak, white queso dip, tri-color bell peppers, a yellow onion, and mini tortillas.

Ingredients

Here I explain the best ingredients for this Philly cheesesteak taco recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Bell pepper – you can buy one pepper, or purchase a package of tri-color bell peppers and mix them up.
  • Onion
  • Shaved beef steak – this is one of my favorite ingredients from the meat department at Trader Joe’s. It cooks up super quickly and is perfect for making sandwiches and tacos. If you’re shopping at a traditional grocery store, look for any type of shaved, or finely sliced steak. I found finely sliced ribeye at my local store that would also work great in this recipe.
  • White queso dip – I love the dips at Trader Joe’s, and this is one of my all-time favorites. If you’re not shopping at a Trader Joe’s, you should be able to find a jar of Tostito’s queso blanco dip on the chip aisle at a traditional grocery store. If you want to make my homemade Slow Cooker Queso Blanco Dip, this is a delicious option and a great way to use up any leftovers from game day or a party!
  • Mini Sonora style tortillas –  if you’re at a traditional grocery store, you’ll want to pick up “fajita size” tortillas for this recipe. These small flour tortillas are 6 inches wide. You can also use corn tortillas to make this recipe gluten free.

This recipe is perfect with these 5 ingredients, but I do recommend adding a couple of kitchen staples, like salt and pepper for seasoning the steak, and cooking oil for cooking the vegetables.

Instructions

I’ve included step by step photos below to make this recipe super easy to follow at home. For the full detailed recipe instructions, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Cook the onions and peppers. Thinly slice a bell pepper and onion. Recommended: Add 1 tablespoon oil to a large skillet. Place the skillet on the stove over medium-high heat. When the skillet is hot, add the peppers and onions and sauté for 5-6 minutes. Remove the veggies from the pan and set aside.
  2. Cook the steak. Add the shaved steak to the same skillet over medium-high heat on the stove and cook for 1-2 minutes. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until no longer pink. Drain any grease from the skillet. Optional: season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Add the peppers and onions back to the skillet. Toss to combine everything. Turn the heat down to low.
  3. Assemble the tacos. Heat the white queso dip for 1 minute in the microwave. Wrap the tortillas in damp paper towels and microwave for 1 minute. Add the cooked steak and veggies to the warm tortillas, then spoon the queso dip on top. Serve immediately.

Optional additions

The idea of a 5 ingredient recipe is to keep things simple, but if you’d like to add a side dish, these are my easy recommendations.

You’ll have some white queso dip leftover. Grab a bag of tortilla chips and serve them with the queso on the side of the tacos. If you want to serve the tacos with a side that you’d typically find with a classic Philly Cheesesteak, pair the tacos with potato chips or french fries. Trader Joe’s has several options in their freezer, from seasoned waffle fries, to sweet potato fries, to Trader potato tots.
