Why you’ll love this sandwich
In 2024 I started a series on Instagram where I shared a new Trader Joe’s 5 ingredient recipe every week. The series was so successful that I turned all of the recipes into an ebook. Click on the link and you can get it for FREE!
Due to reader demand for more of these recipes, I’m back and bringing you a new Trader Joe’s 5 ingredient recipe every week. But don’t worry if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s around you. I’ll give alternate ingredients that you can pick up at any major grocery store, so you can always make these recipes at home. And trust me you’re going to want to make this recipe. Here’s why:
- Simple ingredients, big flavor. Using incredibly flavorful chimichurri sauce adds a bright, herbaceous taste to the sandwiches. Adding tangy, creamy provolone cheese compliments the flavor of the steak, cooked in beef broth, for an extra rich, beefy flavor. Overall, this sandwich is packed with flavor, using only 5 ingredients!
- Quick and easy! If you’ve got 10 minutes, you can make these sandwiches for a super simple lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for this chimichurri steak sandwich recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Sandwich starters – these Trader Joe’s pre-sliced sandwich buns are perfect for this recipe. If you’re shopping at a traditional grocery store, head to the bakery and pick up ciabatta rolls, hoagie rolls, or French sandwich rolls.
- Chimichurri sauce – this is one of my all-time favorite sauces from Trader Joe’s. (And trust me, I’ve tried them all!) If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, you can make my homemade chimichurri sauce with fresh parsley, oregano, red wine vinegar, red pepper flakes, and garlic cloves.
- Shaved beef steak – this is one of my favorite ingredients from the meat department at Trader Joe’s. It cooks up super quickly and is perfect for making sandwiches and tacos. If you’re shopping at a traditional grocery store, look for any type of shaved, or finely sliced steak. I found finely sliced ribeye at my local store that would also work great in this recipe. This recipe is also a great way to use up leftover cooked steak.
- Beef broth – purchase a quart at the store, or make it at home with beef bouillon.
- Provolone cheese – the sharp, tangy taste of this cheese pairs great with the chimichurri sauce. It’s also a great cheese for melting over the steak in these sandwiches.
This recipe is perfect with these 5 ingredients, but if you’d like to add a little something extra, I recommend adding arugula and roasted red peppers to the sandwich. I also recommend using a little cooking spray, softened butter, or any oil you have on hand, to brush on the sandwich rolls. This will help them get nicely brown and toasted.
Instructions
I’ve included step by step photos below to make this recipe super easy to follow at home. For the full detailed recipe instructions, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Toast the rolls. Preheat the broiler on your oven to high heat. Arrange a rack about 1/3 of the way down in the oven. Place the rolls cut side up on a baking sheet. (Recommended: spray with cooking spray.) Place in the oven for 1-2 minutes, under the broiler, until golden brown and toasted. Remove from the oven and spread chimichurri sauce on the cut side of each roll. Set the top half of each roll aside.
- Cook the beef. Pour the beef broth into a pot on the stove over high heat. Once the broth is boiling, dip the beef in the broth and cook for 2 minutes. Use tongs, or a slotted spoon, to remove the beef from the broth. Continue boiling the broth while you prepare the sandwiches.
- Assemble the sandwiches. Pile the cooked beef on the bottom half of each roll on top of the chimichurri sauce. Place a slice of provolone cheese on top of the beef on each roll. Place back in the oven under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling. Remove from the oven and add the top bun with chimichurri sauce. Remove the broth from the stove and ladle it into small bowls to serve on the side of the sandwiches for dipping.
What to serve with it
If you want a simple Trader Joe’s side to pair with the sandwiches, I recommend heating up some of their seasoned waffle cut fries or sweet potato fries. Both are easy to cook in the air fryer in about 10 minutes. The same amount of time it takes to make these sandwiches!
You can also go with an easy potato chip pairing. I like the Kettle Cooked Rosemary & Sea Salt Potato Chips from Trader Joe’s, or the Vegetable Root Chips.
If you want something homemade, pair the chimichurri steak sandwiches with air fryer french fries, truffle fries, an Italian salad, or air fryer onion rings.

Chimichurri Steak Sandwich
Ingredients
- 4 sandwich starters, or your favorite sandwich rolls
- ½ cup chimichurri sauce
- 1 quart beef broth
- 1 pound shaved beef steak
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- Optional: cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat the oven broiler to high.
- Place the rolls, cut side facing up on a baking sheet. If you have some cooking spray on hand, spray the rolls with it. Place under the broiler in the oven for 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown and toasted.
- Remove the rolls from the oven and spread chimichurri sauce on the cut side of each roll. Set the top half of each roll aside.
- Pour the beef broth into a pot on the stove over high heat. Once the broth is boiling, dip the beef in the broth and cook for 2 minutes. Use tongs, or a slotted spoon, to remove the beef from the broth. Continue boiling the broth while you prepare the sandwiches.
- Pile the cooked beef on the bottom half of each roll on top of the chimichurri sauce. Place a slice of provolone cheese on top of the beef on each roll.
- Place under the broiler in the oven for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the oven, add the top half of the roll and serve immediately. Remove the broth from the stove and ladle it into small bowls to serve on the side of the sandwiches for dipping.
Notes
- This recipe makes 4 sandwiches. If you only want to make 2 sandwiches at a time, you can go ahead and cook all of the steak in the broth, then store the cooked steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When you’re ready to make the other 2 sandwiches, go ahead and assemble the sandwiches. The beef will heat up in the oven as it toasts under the cheese.
