Why this seasoning works

  1. Garlic, onion, and ginger act as aromatics building a deep, complex base for the spice blend.
  2. Crushed thai chili peppers add spice to the mix, and can be adjusted to your taste preference.
  3. Dried lime powder adds the sour flavor traditionally found in Thai cuisine.
  4. Cumin and coriander add rich, complex flavors to the spice blend.
  5. Combined, all of these ingredients will give you a savory, spicy, salty blend that’s perfect for adding Thai flavors to any meal!

You’ll love this seasoning because it’s easy to mix up, you can store it in the pantry for 6 months, and it’s incredibly versatile!

Ingredients

Here I explain the best ingredients for this Thai seasoning recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Garlic powder (or granulated garlic)
  • Onion powder (or granulated onion)
  • Thai chili peppers (crushed) – the original inspiration for this seasoning blend was after I saw McCormick introduced their Thai-Style Crushed Chili Peppers. You can find them online, at Walmart, and at other major grocery stores on the spice aisle. If you can’t find it, you can use traditional crushed red pepper flakes instead.
  • Sea salt
  • Dried lime powder – my husband uses these packets of True Lime to add flavor to water. It comes in packets or a shaker. I’ll give you measurements for both in the recipe card below. You can find it at Target, Walmart, online, and at some grocery stores. If you can’t find it, you can always add lime juice to whatever recipe you’re making with the seasoning.
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cumin
  • Coriander powder

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl.
  2. Store in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 6 months.

Ways to use it

This Thai seasoning mix is a great way to season proteins like chicken, shrimp, or pork before grilling or adding them to stir fries. I recommend using 2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix per pound of protein.

To make a marinade with the seasoning, combine 2 tablespoons seasoning, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons fish sauce, 2 tablespoons oil, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Use this to marinate up to 2 pounds of chicken, pork, seafood, or beef.

You can also add the seasoning to white rice, brown rice, or coconut rice to enhance the flavor, or sprinkle it over vegetables before roasting.

Try it in this Grilled Thai Chicken recipe (pictured above) and you’ll fall in love with the flavors of this mix!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Notes

  • This recipe makes 12 tablespoons of Thai seasoning. I recommend using 2 tablespoons of seasoning per pound of protein.
  • If you’d like to make a double batch of the seasoning, simply click the 2X button above. The ingredient amounts will automatically update to accommodate the new serving size.
  • The seasoning will stay good, stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, like the pantry, for up to 6 months. After that the spice blend will not “go bad” but as spices sit longer, they begin to lose their flavor.
  • I recommend storing the seasoning mix in an 8 ounce mason jarIf doubling the recipe, use a pint size or 16 ounce mason jar. I recommend labeling the Thai seasoning with the date.
  • This recipe is gluten free, and contains no added sugar, making it perfect for a whole30 or keto diet.
