herbs and spices separated in bowl

After visiting the islands of Greece on my honeymoon, I immediately fell in love with the flavors of Greek food. I wanted to bottle up the flavors and bring it home with me. This spice blend was the best way to do that!

This combination of spices is what I came to find in most of the Greek dishes that I loved. The abundance of herbs in their cooking gives it that signature fresh Mediterranean flavor.

The nine herbs and spices found in this spice blend combine for a symphony of flavors. This seasoning blend can be used on meats, like chicken, lamb or seafood. It can also be combined with Greek yogurt and feta cheese to make an incredible dip. Or with Greek yogurt to make a flavorful, creamy salad dressing.

The possibilities really are endless when it comes to ways that you can use this Greek seasoning blend! The best part is, it only takes 5 minutes to whip up this recipe. You can easily double it and store it in the pantry for up to 6 months. This way, you’ll have flavorful Greek seasoning ready to go whenever you want to transport your taste buds to Greece!

Ingredients

  • Dried oregano – if you can find it, I recommend using Greek oregano. It has a deeper, stronger flavor than traditional Italian oregano and it really stands out in this seasoning blend.
  • Garlic powder (or granulated garlic) – the only difference between granulated garlic and garlic powder is that the powder has been ground finer, than the granulated garlic. I prefer to use granulated garlic because it’s less likely to clump over time, than garlic powder.
  • Onion powder (or granulated onion) – the only difference between granulated onion and onion powder is that the powder has been ground finer, than the granulated onion. I prefer to use granulated onion because it’s less likely to clump over time, than onion powder.
  • Sea salt (or kosher salt) – both sea salt and kosher salt can be used interchangeably when cooking. I prefer either kosher or sea salt, over table salt, in this seasoning mix because of their coarse texture and superior flavor.
  • Black pepper – I recommend a course-ground pepper for this recipe, as it adds great texture to the spice blend.
  • Dried parsley flakes
  • Dried mint – mint is a widely used herb in Greek cooking, in both sweet and savory dishes.
  • Dried basil
  • Dried dill weed – I was surprised at how much dill I found in the food in Greece. Before traveling to the country, this was not an herb that I strongly associated with Greek food, but it’s everywhere in Greece! From pastries, to pastas, the flavor of dill now transports me back to the islands of Greece.

Recipe tips

  • This recipe makes 12 tablespoons of Greek seasoning. If you’d like to make a double batch of the seasoning, simply click on the 2X button in the recipe card below. The ingredient amounts in the recipe card will automatically update to accommodate the new serving size.
  • If using the spice blend to season meat, I recommend using 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of meat.
  • The Greek seasoning will stay good, stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, like the pantry, for up to 6 months. After that the spice blend will not “go bad” but as dried herbs and spices sit longer, they begin to lose their flavor.
  • I recommend storing the seasoning mix in an 8 ounce mason jarIf doubling the recipe, use a pint size or 16 ounce mason jar. I recommend labeling the Greek seasoning with a date and using the seasoning mix within 6 months.
  • This homemade Greek seasoning recipe is naturally gluten free, vegan and Whole30 approved.

Ways to use it

There are dozens of ways to use this homemade Greek seasoning mix in the kitchen. From making dips and salad dressings, to seasoning meats and veggies, the possibilities are endless! Mix up a batch of the seasoning and try all of these different ways to use it.

  • Creamy Greek salad dressing – add 1 cup crumbled feta cheese, 1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt and 2 tablespoons of the Greek seasoning to a blender, or food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy. Toss with your favorite greens, and add your favorite salad toppings to make a delicious homemade salad.
  • Vinaigrette salad dressing – combine 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar, with 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning to make a delicious Greek vinaigrette dressing. Toss it with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, kalamata olives, feta cheese and fresh mint leaves to make a traditional Greek salad.
  • Creamy dip (pictured above) – add 2 cups crumbled feta cheese, 1 cup Greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning and 1 tablespoon granulated sugar to a food processor. Turn the processor on and blend until the dip is smooth and creamy. Cover and store in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with veggies, crackers or pita bread for dipping.
  • Tzatziki sauce – place 3/4 cup peeled, grated cucumber into a thick paper towel and wring the cucumber dry over the sink. Add the cucumber to a bowl. Combine it with 1 teaspoon white vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 2 cups Greek yogurt and 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  • Eggplant salad – this was one of my favorite things that I ate in Greece. I recreated it at home using this Greek seasoning, and it’s even better than the salad I fell in love with in Greece. Click the link above for the full recipe.
  • Marinade – combine 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning. Use it to marinate up to 2 pounds of chicken breasts, or thighs. You could also use this recipe to marinate pork chops, pork tenderloin or lamb chops.
  • Soulvaki – use the marinade recipe above, but dice boneless, skinless chicken breasts into 1 inch cubes before adding them to the marinade. After marinating the chicken cubes for at least 1 hour, skewer the marinated chicken, 6-8 cubes per skewer. Grill the chicken skewers to make soulvaki. Serve it with tzatziki sauce. (Recipe listed above.)
  • Gyros – replace the oregano, salt and pepper in this Ground Turkey Gyro recipe with 2 tablespoon Greek seasoning to give it even more flavor. To make traditional gyro meat, follow this recipe for homemade gyros. Replace the dried herbs, salt and pepper with 3 tablespoons of this Greek seasoning.
  • Greek fries – to make Greek-seasoned fries to go with your gyros, use this recipe for Air Fryer French Fries. Instead of fry seasoning, toss the fries with 1 tablespoon of this Greek spice blend.
  • Greek pasta – replace the oregano, parsley, salt and pepper in this One Pot Greek Pasta recipe with 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning to add even more flavor to this easy dish!
  • Greek Soup – replace the oregano, salt and pepper in this Healthy Slow Cooker Greek Soup recipe with 2 tablespoons of this Greek seasoning.
  • Grilled or roasted veggies – toss 1 pound of sliced or diced vegetables, like zucchini, bell peppers, broccoli or cauliflower, with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Coat with 1 tablespoon Greek seasoning. Place on a veggie grill tray, or large piece of grill-safe foil. Grill for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through the grilling time. If roasting the veggies, place them in an even layer on a foil-lined baking sheet. Roast in a 400°F oven for 15-20 minutes.
