Whether you want to enhance the flavor of your favorite pizza, or add the flavor of pizza to popcorn, eggs, french fries, and more, this Pizza Seasoning is here to help! This Trader Joe’s copycat recipe is easy to make in just 5 minutes, and you can keep the homemade spice blend in the pantry for up to 6 months.
Why you’ll love this recipe
For a hot minute, Trader Joe’s sold a Pizza Sprinkle Seasoning Blend. I loved this blend because it wasn’t just a flavor enhancer for pizza, it was a spice blend that you could use on anything to make it pizza flavored.
Unlike traditional Italian seasoning, which is a blend of garlic, onion, and herbs, pizza seasoning also contains tomato powder. This adds the true flavor of pizza to things like roasted vegetables, french fries, and popcorn.
You can make this spice blend without the tomato powder if you simply want to use it as a pizza seasoning. This is a great way to add flavor to pizza sauce, the crust of a pizza, or sprinkle it on pizza after it’s cooked to finish it with great flavor.
Or you can make this recipe with the tomato powder to add the flavor of pizza to just about anything and everything! Either way you make it, here’s why I know you’ll love it.
- It’s easy to make! It only takes 5 minutes to mix up this simple pizza seasoning.
- It adds pizza-flavored goodness to tons of different meals and snacks! Want to make a pizza-flavored grilled cheese, or pizza-flavored scrambled eggs? You can do it with this spice blend!
- You can store it in the pantry for up to 6 months. This way, the flavor of pizza is always just a shake away!
Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for this pizza seasoning recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Dried oregano – this earthy, aromatic herb adds a delicious peppery bite to this spice blend. It’s the main ingredient in the spice blend and the herb most commonly associated with pizza. Most pizza restaurants finish a pizza with dried oregano, or place a shaker of it on the table.
- Dried basil – this herb is aromatic and mostly sweet, with a touch of savory and notes of pepper.
- Garlic powder (or granulated garlic) – the only difference between granulated garlic and garlic powder is that the powder has been ground finer. I prefer to use granulated garlic because it’s less likely to clump over time, than garlic powder.
- Onion powder (or granulated onion) – the only difference between granulated onion and onion powder is that the powder has been ground finer. I prefer to use granulated onion because it’s less likely to clump over time, than onion powder.
- Sea salt
- Black pepper
- Dried parsley – even in it’s dried form, parsley adds a bright, fresh flavor to this seasoning mix.
- Paprika
- Tomato powder (optional) – this is the ingredient that takes this recipe from a seasoning for pizza, to make it a pizza-flavored seasoning. While tomato powder is not traditionally found in grocery stores, it’s easy and inexpensive to order tomato powder online.
You can also add in red pepper flakes for a kick of heat.
Instructions
- Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl.
- Store in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 6 months. I recommend storing the seasoning mix in an 8 ounce mason jar. If doubling the recipe, use a pint size or 16 ounce mason jar.
Easy as that, in 5 minutes, you have a homemade pizza seasoning blend, ready to make tons of pizza-flavored meals and snacks.
Ways to use it
Pizza seasoning (with or without the tomato powder) can be used to season pizza sauce, pizza dough, or a cooked pizza. When adding it to pizza sauce, I recommend adding 1 tablespoon pizza seasoning to 12 ounces of pizza sauce or tomato sauce.
When using it to season pizza dough, I recommend sprinkling the seasoning evenly over the stretched-out dough before adding the sauce, cheese and other toppings. You can try it on this pan pizza recipe for your next homemade pizza night.
You can also sprinkle the seasoning evenly over a pizza after it’s cooked. This is a great way to level up store-bought pizza.
To make pizza-flavored foods, use the seasoning in this recipe for pizza grilled cheese (pictured above). You can also sprinkle it over popcorn, roasted vegetables, scrambled eggs, avocado toast, or french fries. Or add the pizza spice mix to pasta dishes. It would taste great in this Pizza Baked Spaghetti recipe.
You can also use it to take these recipes for pepperoni pizza rolls or pizza dip to the next level. Simply use the pizza seasoning in place of Italian seasoning in these recipes.
How to make pizza garlic bread
Use the pizza seasoning to make the best garlic bread by following the instructions below.
- Slice a loaf of Italian bread or french bread in half lengthwise through the middle.
- Combine ½ cup softened butter with ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese and 2 tablespoons pizza seasoning. Spread this mixture on the cut side of each half of the bread.
- Place the bread with the butter-side facing up on a baking sheet and on the middle rack of the oven with the broiler on high. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the butter starts to brown and bubble.
