Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for this cajun sauce recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Mayonnaise – half of the creamy base for the sauce. You can use all sour cream, but the sauce won’t be as thick and luscious.
- Sour cream – the other half of the creamy base.
- Hot sauce – I prefer to use a “Louisiana style” hot sauce to make this recipe with the most authentic Cajun flavor. I’ve used The Original Louisiana Brand, Red Rooster, and Crystal Hot Sauce to make this recipe in the past. They all work great!
- Cajun seasoning – click the link to mix up my homemade spice blend in just 5 minutes and store it in the pantry for up to 6 months. It’s a delicious combination of pantry staples like paprika, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Of course, you can also pick up pre-made Cajun seasoning on the spice aisle at the grocery store.
- Lemon juice
Instructions
- Whisk the mayo, sour cream, hot sauce, Cajun seasoning, and lemon juice together in a bowl.
- Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 10 days.
Ways to use it
This creamy Cajun sauce is so versatile, you can use it a dozen different ways, or more! Here are my favorite ways to use it.
- Toss it: my favorite way to use the sauce is to make Cajun Wings (pictured above) in the air fryer, oven, or on the grill.
- Dip it: it’s also delicious as a dipping sauce for veggies, fries, or Blackened Shrimp (recipe coming soon!)
- Spread it: use it as a sandwich spread or burger spread. Season a burger patty with hot sauce and Cajun seasoning, grill it, then top it with smoked gouda or pepper jack cheese. Spread this Cajun cream sauce on a toasted bun, add the burger, and dig in!
- Drizzle it: this sauce is great drizzled on chicken, steak, or seafood. Try it with these recipes for Grilled Cajun Chicken, Blackened Beef Tenderloin, Cajun Steak Tacos, Air Fryer Salmon, or Grilled Bacon Wrapped Shrimp.

Creamy Cajun Sauce
Ingredients
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons Cajun hot sauce
- 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning, click link for the recipe
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
Instructions
- Stir all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Notes
- This recipe is fairly spicy. If you want to reduce the spice, only use 1 tablespoon hot sauce. To make the sauce more spicy, add more hot sauce to taste.
- This sauce will stay good in the fridge for up to 10 days. I do not recommend freezing the sauce because it’s dairy-based and the texture won’t be the same after it’s defrosted.
- If tossing the sauce with chicken wings, I recommend 1/4 cup of sauce per pound of wings.
