A delicious holiday party appetizer, this easy Baked Brie recipe in a sourdough bread bowl is topped with buttery sweet caramelized pears and a drizzle of honey!
Itโs Christmas week! Woo hoo! A time for family, watching Home Alone and eating all the bread and cheese!! Carbs donโt count during Christmas week, right?! ๐
Two weeks ago I headed up to Big Bear, a cute little mountain town northeast of San Diego, with the husband and friends to celebrate my birthday. On the way home, we decided to stop in the wine country area of Temecula for a little lunch and wine tasting!
My husband kept going on and on about this baked brie in a bread bowl heโd had at a winery a few years ago. I did a quick google search and found the Maurice Carโrie Winery. Sure enough, first thing when you walk in the door, thereโs a little old lady at a table selling these famous Baked Brie Bread Bowls.
All I could think was โthis is amazingโ and โhow did I not think of this before?!โ After all, it couldnโt be a total coincidence that a round of brie cheese just so happens to fit perfectly in a round sourdough loaf, right?! ๐
While the Maurice Carโrie Winery made their Baked Brie Bread Bowl on the savory side with herbs and lots and lots and lots of roasted garlic, I decided to come home and recreate this recipe on the sweet side!
I love the combination of caramelized pears, brie cheese and honey, so this combo for the Baked Brie Bread Bowl was a no-brainer!
I dare you to say โBaked Brie Bread Bowlโ 5 times as fast as you canโฆ goโฆ babadababidaba, yeah, thatโs basically what happens, haha!
Now letโs get to this seriously scrumptious recipe thatโs equal parts amazingly creamy, perfectly sweet, and easy to make!
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 bartlett pears (core removed & thinly sliced)
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 round sourdough bread loaf
- 1 round (7 oz) Brie cheese
- 2 tbsp honey
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375ยฐF.
Place the butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Once the butter has melted, add the pears and brown sugar. Cook for 10-12 minutes, or until the pears are caramelized.
Meanwhile, slice the top ยฝ inch off of the round of sourdough bread.
Cut a circle the size of the brie from the middle of the sourdough loaf being careful not to cut through to the bottom of the loaf.
Place the brie in the middle of the loaf.
Top with the caramelized pears, then drizzle with the honey.
Place on a baking dish and cover with the top slice of bread.
Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes.
Remove from the oven and slice the top piece of bread into cubes for dipping up the baked brie and pear goodness!
Cut slits every inch along the edge of the bread bowl, for easy pulling apart and dipping.
Yessssss, gimme!
Not gonna lie to you, my husband and I ate this for breakfast, almost the entire thing! Iโm kind of ashamed, but not really, because it was so amazing and decadent and all of the things Christmas week should be!
Do you have a favorite family holiday appetizer tradition?
Ours has been Sausage Balls and Little Smokies for as long as I can remember, but Iโm definitely stepping the appetizer game up this year and bringing this new recipe to Christmas day in Oklahoma!

Do you leave the top layer of wax on the brie?
I do! You definitely can leave it or take it off, whatever your preference is!
Can you tell me how the one with Roasted Garlic is made
Hello Cherie, unfortunately at this time I have not made the roasted garlic version myself, so I would not be able to instruct on how to make it. I will add it to my list of recipe requests for future recipe development!
The Brie with pears is amazing! I rarely comment or enjoy sweet as opposed to savory, but I have to comment on this recipe. This recipe is amazing. The last two holiday seasons I made it with pears I received as gifts. It is now a holiday staple. Itโs a hit with everyone! This year I even sent pears as a gift with your recipe enclosed. Thank you, thank you.
Aww thanks so much Karla! I LOVE to hear that! Iโm generally a savory over sweet girl also, but I do agree, this recipe is one of my favorites! So glad youโre getting to share it with friends. I love the idea of sending the recipe with pears, such a great gift idea!
Yum! So delicious!
