Why you’ll love this sauce
Since 2016 when I drizzled this chipotle sauce on these Brisket Tacos, I’ve been making this sauce and putting it on everything!
This sauce is so good, I keep it in the fridge almost all of the time because it’s so incredibly versatile. It’s a great sauce for drizzling on bowls, salads, tacos, or fajitas. It’s also a great dipping sauce for chicken strips, french fries and taquitos.
You’re going to love this sauce, and here’s why!
- It’s easy to make in 5 minutes with 5 simple ingredients!
- It’s versatile and can be served with a ton of dishes!
- It tastes so delicious, with layers of flavor that range from smoky and spicy, to creamy and zesty!

Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for this creamy chipotle sauce recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Sour cream – the creamy base for the sauce. You can also use Mexican crema or full-fat Greek yogurt.
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce – you’ll find these canned chili peppers in the hispanic section of the grocery store. For this recipe, you’ll use 2 peppers from the can of chipotles. These peppers give this recipe the real chipotle flavor that shines through in the sauce.
- Lime juice – a hint of fresh squeezed lime juice adds a delicious zest to the sauce.
- Garlic
- Salt – to season the sauce and enhance the flavor of the chipotle peppers.
- Honey (optional) – if you’d like to add a hint of sweetness to the sauce, feel free to add 1 teaspoon honey. I’ve made this recipe with it, and without it, and it’s delicious either way!

Instructions
- Add the sour cream, chipotle peppers, lime juice, garlic clove, salt (and honey, if you’re using it) to a blender, or food processor.
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
Easy as that, in 5 minutes you have a deliciously creamy sauce ready for drizzling and dipping!

Chipotle Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 small chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, from a can
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 tablespoon lime juice, fresh-squeezed
- ½ teaspoon salt
Optional
- 1 teaspoon honey, optional addition for sweetness
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a blender, or food processor, and blend until smooth and creamy.
Notes
- Chipotle sauce can be stored in the refrigerator, in an airtight container, for up to 10 days. It will thicken up as it sits in the fridge. Simply give it a stir to loosen it up before serving.
- I do not recommend freezing any sauce that contains dairy. The sauce will separate in the freezer and will not be the same consistency once it’s defrosted.
- This recipe is naturally gluten free.
- To make a dairy-free and vegan version of this sauce, use this vegan chipotle sauce recipe that’s made with a base of soaked cashews, instead of sour cream.
- To increase the spice level of the sauce, add an additional chipotle pepper and 1 teaspoon adobo sauce from the can of peppers.
- To add sweetness to this sauce, add 1 teaspoon honey. If you’d like it even sweeter, add an additional teaspoon of honey.
- You can easily double this recipe. Simply click the 2X button above. The ingredient amounts will automatically update to make a double batch of the sauce. Follow the instructions the same as if you were making a single batch.
