Table of contents
When heading to a pizzeria or Italian restaurant, if there are garlic knots on the menu, I’m ordering them every time! I am a bread lover and a garlic lover, so the combination of soft, buttery dough wrapped up and covered in garlic, makes my heart go pitter-patter!
While you can always make your own pizza dough at home, using store-bought pizza dough means that you can make this garlic knots recipe anytime in just 20 minutes! It only takes 5-10 minutes to prep (depending on how fast you can tie dough in a knot!) then 12 minutes to bake.
These garlic knots are topped with plenty of garlic butter to make sure that the garlic shines through. And they taste even better than garlic knots at a pizzeria!
Ingredients
- Refrigerated pizza dough – I like to buy a can of Pillsbury pizza crust for this recipe. It rolls out into a rectangle, perfect for slicing into strips to make the garlic knots. Of course, you can purchase a ball of pre-made pizza dough at the grocery store, then stretch it out into a rectangle. Or you can use my homemade pizza recipe to make your own dough.
- Unsalted butter – I prefer to use unsalted butter, so that I can determine how much salt I want to add to the recipe. If using salted butter, omit the added salt in this recipe.
- Garlic – for this recipe I crushed 6 cloves of garlic. This gives these garlic knots a strong garlic flavor, when combined with the Italian seasoning, which also contains garlic. You can use less garlic if you don’t want the flavor to be as strong, but I recommend using at least 4 cloves for this recipe, as garlic is in the name! I always recommend using fresh crushed cloves of garlic, instead of a jar of minced garlic or garlic powder, for the best, fresh flavor.
- Italian seasoning – I highly recommend mixing up my homemade Italian seasoning recipe, linked above. It only takes 5 minutes, or less, to mix up and it’s filled with wonderful flavors and textures that top off these garlic knots perfectly!
- Salt – to season the butter for topping the knots. If using salted butter, omit the added salt in this recipe.
Instructions
I’ve included step by step photos below to make this recipe super easy to follow at home. For the full detailed recipe instructions and ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Slice the pizza dough into strips. If using the canned pizza crust pictured in this post, simply roll it out onto a large cutting board. If using a ball of pizza dough, stretch it out into a rectangle. Slice the pizza dough into 9 equal strips of dough.
- Tie the dough in knots. Just like you’re tying your shoelaces, take each strip of dough, tie it in a knot and place it on a sheet pan. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper to make clean up a breeze!
- Make the garlic butter. Melt butter in a small bowl, then stir in crushed garlic, Italian seasoning and salt.
- Top the knots with the garlic butter and bake. Use a pastry brush to brush half of the garlic butter mixture on the garlic knots. Place the knots in the oven and bake for 12 minutes, or until the knots are golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush the garlic knots with the remaining seasoned butter. Serve immediately.
Optional additions
These garlic knots are perfect just the way they are, but if you want to add just a little something extra, try these delicious additions, and make yourself some cheesy garlic knots.
- Parmesan cheese – either stir 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese into the garlic butter before topping the garlic knots, or top the knots with 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese before serving.
- Mozzarella cheese – after the knots have been brushed with half of the garlic butter, top them each with about a tablespoon of shredded mozzarella cheese (total of 9 tablespoons cheese) before baking them in the oven.
- Fresh parsley – right before serving, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped parsley evenly over the garlic knots.
What to serve them with
I love to serve these garlic knots as an appetizer or game day snack with a side of pizza dip or warm marinara sauce for dipping. I’m also a huge fan of serving them as a side dish on pizza night, or with our favorite Italian meals. Try the garlic knots with any of these delicious, tested and perfected Italian recipes.

Storage and reheating
Store leftover garlic knots in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
If you have an air fryer, I recommend reheating them in an air fryer at 400°F for 4 minutes.
If you don’t have an air fryer, I recommend reheating them in the oven. Turn the broiler on the oven to high. Place the knots on a baking sheet and in the middle rack of the oven for 2 minutes. Be sure to watch the garlic knots under the broiler to make sure the garlic does not burn.
You can reheat them in the microwave, but the texture will be much softer. It’s not my personal preference but if you want, you can pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm them up.
