bagel chips on plate

Wondering, what can I do with old bagels? Did you also succumb to the dozen bagels at Costco for $7.99? It just seems like such a good deal for fresh baked bagels, but we never eat them all! Enter: bagel chips.

After Thanksgiving this year I had several leftover Costco bagels, because I kept making these delicious Pull Apart Cinnamon Rolls for breakfast! Instead of wasting the leftover bagels, I decided to turn them into bagel chips for my upcoming holiday parties.

They’re the perfect vessel for dipping into thick, creamy dips, or spreading with a buffalo cheese ball, or your favorite cheese spread.

It’s easy to make bagel chips in an oven, or air fryer. The air fryer is quicker, but you can only fit so many bagel chips in an even layer in the air fryer. So, if you’re looking to make one small batch of bagel chips, the air fryer is the perfect appliance for this. If you want to make a few dozen bagel chips, you’ll probably want to use the oven.

Both cooking methods result in a crunchy snack, that can easily be made in a variety of flavors. In this post, I made Everything Bagel Chips, but you could also make sweet bagel chips with cinnamon raisin bagels and replace the everything bagel seasoning with cinnamon and sugar. Be sure to read the entire post for other ideas for bagel chip flavors!

Ingredients

  • Bagels – this recipe can be made with any whole leftover bagels (not pre-sliced). I’m using everything bagels in this recipe, but refer to the section below for other flavor combinations to make with your favorite bagels.
  • Cooking spray – any canola oil, vegetable oil, or olive oil spray will work. If you don’t have cooking spray, pour about 2-3 teaspoons of oil in a small bowl, then use a pastry brush to brush the oil on the bagel chips. If you don’t have a pastry brush, use a paper towel to rub the oil on the bagel chips. You want them lightly coated in oil to help the seasoning stick and help them brown in the oven.
  • Everything bagel seasoning – click the link for a homemade seasoning recipe, and make it at home in less than 5 minutes. Or grab a pre-made jar of everything bagel seasoning on the spice aisle at most major grocery stores.

Instructions

  1. Cut each bagel in half with a sharp, serrated knife, through the top, not through the middle, like you would if you were toasting the bagel. Then cut each of bagel into thin slices, that are about 1/8 inch thick.
  2. Arrange the bagel chips in a single layer on a baking sheet, or in an air fryer basket. Spray with cooking spray, then sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning evenly over the chips.
  3. Cook the bagel chips in a preheated 350°F oven for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time.
  4. Or air fry the bagels at 350°F for 4 minutes, flip and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes, or until the bagel chips are brown and crispy.

Other flavor combinations

While everything bagel chips are a classic, if you have other flavors of leftover bagels, try these delicious variations.

  • Blueberry or cinnamon raisin bagels + cinnamon sugar – slice up 2 bagels, then combine 1 tablespoon sugar with 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon to sprinkle on the bagels, instead of the everything bagel seasoning.
  • Garlic bagels + Italian seasoning – slice up two garlic bagels, spray with cooking spray, then top with 1 tablespoon of my homemade Italian Seasoning mix.
  • Onion bagels + French onion dip mix – slice up two onion bagels, spray with cooking spray, then top with 1 tablespoon of my homemade French Onion Dip mix. Then go mix up a big bowl of French onion dip to dip these chips into!
  • Cheddar cheese bagels + Montreal steak seasoning – slice up two cheese bagels, spray with cooking spray, then top with 1 tablespoon of my homemade Montreal steak seasoning. The coarse texture of this seasoning blend is perfect for seasoning these chips.

What to serve with them

Wondering what to eat with everything bagel chips? They go great with cheese spreads and creamy dips! Try pairing the chips with any of these dips and cheeses.

You can also serve them on top of soup, in place of croutons or crackers, or add them to a salad to replace the croutons. The Italian seasoned garlic bagel chips are especially delicious on a caesar salad!

To make a snack that everyone loves, add the bagel chips to homemade Chex Mix.

How to store them

Store bagel chips in an airtight container, like a zippered bag, at room temperature for 2 weeks. Make sure they’ve cooled completely before storing them, and be sure to store them in a cool, dry place. Avoiding any moisture will keep them nice and crispy.
